No Signature Required

Fewer steps, faster service for your customers

No Signature Required (NSR) is a payment solution to help you to accept Visa card payments faster for small ticket purchases of $25 CAN or less (including tax and tip). With NSR, no customer signature is required and a receipt does not have to be provided to the cardholder unless requested. Your line-ups move quickly, your average transaction size should increase and purchases should be processed in less time! NSR only applies to Canadian-issued Visa cards used in Canada.

Plus, you're protected from certain chargebacks for those transactions that qualify under the NSR program.

Merchant Benefits:

Greater speed and convenience

You simply swipe the card and no customer signature is required. You'll see faster service at check out, shorter lines and more customers served

Higher average ticket size

Less dependence on cash

Employees don't need to give change, thereby reducing the chance of errors

Greater customer satisfaction

Protection from certain chargebacks for qualifying NSR transactions

How does it work?

It works in three easy steps:

  • Your customer's Visa card is swiped at your existing point-of-sale terminal, so that the transaction can be authorized.
  • Once authorized, there is no requirement for the cardholder to sign the receipt. This means that staff does not have to verify the signature on the back of the card.
  • You don't have to provide a Visa transaction receipt, unless the cardholder requests one. In that case, a cash register receipt is acceptable if it shows the date, amount and that payment was made with a Visa card.

What is a qualifying transaction?

For eligible businesses:

  • NSR is for small ticket purchases of $25 CAN or less (including tax and tip)
  • The cardholder must be present so that the transaction occurs in a face-to-face environment
  • All transactions must be processed online and authorized. If you are unsure whether your terminal always sends an authorization request, ask your Acquirer/ Payment Processor.
  • All transactions must be Canadian transactions with a Canadian-issued Visa card

What about chargebacks?

You're protected from chargebacks on domestic transactions (Canadian issued card used in Canada) for the following reasons:

  • Illegible fulfilment (e.g., unreadable Visa card number or transaction amount)
  • Incorrect Transaction Amount or Account
  • Fraud — Card Present Environment (e.g., stolen or counterfeit card)
  • Transaction not recognized by customer (e.g., customer does not recognize business name or location)

Is my business eligible?

Your business qualifies for NSR if it falls into one of these merchant categories:

  • Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) - (Merchant Category Code 5814)
  • Parking Lots or Garages - (Merchant Category Code 7523)
  • Movie Theatres (Merchant Category Code 7832)
  • Video Rental Stores (Merchant Category Code 7841)
  • Newsstands (Merchant Category Code 5994)
  • Cigar Stores (Merchant Category Code 5993)
  • Convenience/Variety Stores (Merchant Category Codes 5331 and 5499)

If you are unsure whether your business falls within one of these categories, please contact your Acquirer / Payment Processor for verification.
